Funding and investment

Investment

There are opportunities to obtain finance for local energy projects that go beyond the more familiar sources. We would encourage local authorities and other energy project developers to consider alternatives. The number of local energy projects in development is expected to increase considerably in future, and it’s unlikely that government grants and charitable funds will be able to keep pace with this demand.

Information is provided here about some of the alternative financing currently available. If you would like further advice, or if you have information to share about similar investment opportunities, please contact us info@energyhub.org.uk

Abundance Crowdfunding for Local Authorities

Abundance help local authorities and other public sector
organisations finance infrastructure projects through citizen and stakeholder investment.

In 2016 the company launched the first Local Authority Green ISA bond with Swindon Borough Council, which funded two 5MW solar parks with the participation of more than 1,600 investors. Since then, Abundance has been working to find ways to help more Local Authorities finance public infrastructure through crowdfunding to create new sources of competitive funding, real engagement from citizens and more sustainable and thriving local economies.

Abundance Investment Pilot Community Municipal Bonds

Abundance Investment has now launched a £125,000 fund to help local authorities set up pilot Community Municipal Bonds which can be used for raising finance for green and low-carbon infrastructure projects.

The Community Municipal Bond utilises the crowdfunding approach to create an efficient, scalable, and cost-effective alternative to conventional funding sources such as the Public Works Loan Board. But more than that, it creates a powerful new model for local authorities to engage with citizens as investors.

Each authority would get £20,000 – £30,000 to help cover the legal and internal set up costs of issuing a Community Municipal Bond. The funds are being provided via Horizon 2020, the largest ever European funding programme for research and innovation.
